SchoolSAFE Communications is a web-enabled two-way radio based solution that connects public safety two-way radios to school and district radios in the event of an emergency.

School-based radio systems are generally lack the channel capacities, power, and digital signaling to interoperate directly with public safety professionals who may have more sophisticated radio systems. With SchoolSAFE’s hardware, software, and training, public safety professionals can initiate communication with district and school personnel by utilizing their existing two-way radios.

When there is an incident at a school, some schools have only one method to contact police, with a local phone call. Calling 9-1-1 usually gets the school location information to the authorities; however, once the responders are in route or arrive at the school, there is no clear line of communication for them to quickly assess the situation and find the exact location of the event to gain control of the incident. What if trained school personnel, principal, administrators, security staff, or others could talk directly to the responders?

Time critical and crucial information from where the incident is occurring could inform the responders with up-to-the-second information so they could respond with the best equipment and personnel to manage the incident.

Lives could be saved. Incidents could be controlled more quickly.

Learn about SchoolSAFE Communications

Police officers, firefighters, and EMS personnel use two-way radios to allow rapid communications to their dispatch center or Public Safely Answering Point (PSAP, where 9-1-1 calls are answered) to control and coordinate their safety and lifesaving actions. Schools use radios for daily use but those radios do not operate on the same frequencies as those used by public safety. In conjunction with the Certified Ready training and exercise program, SchoolSAFE connects, or bridges public safety radios to the radios within the school.

School staff or security responds to an incident. After calling 9-1-1, more information is needed. How do the first responders know the latest location information or status of the incident? After the dispatcher activates SchoolSAFE, the public safety responders can now speak to those in charge at the school, improving the response and saving valuable time.

Customer Use Case:

“A man behind the school in the teacher’s parking lot was waiting for a specific teacher to exit the building, intending to kill her. The teacher was approached by the man in his car and was shot as she ran to her car. She was hit in the back shoulder and the man drove away.

When the shots were fired, 9-1-1 was called and all responding agencies were sent to the school. The responders arrived at the front of the school and had to be redirected to go to the back of the school in the teacher’s parking lot, adding to the response time. They could have been given critical time-saving information to the police had there been the ability to bridge and communicate directly with the school personnel at the scene. Without radio interoperability, time was lost and the response was not as effective.”

The SchoolSAFE Program

SchoolSAFE bridging is based on industry standard devices that are time-tested and reliable. Complex public safety radio systems regularly use similar equipment for temporary bridges to outside radio systems. This is where SchoolSAFE Communications differentiates itself from temporary radio bridges. SchoolSAFE hardware is permanently installed and integrated into school and public safety data networks to allow remote activation and deactivation via a software, and school safety teams are trained on best practices.

Prevention of unauthorized use and activation is part of the package. Certified Ready training and exercise  included with installation will define how to activate the system either via the radio itself and/or via the software, best practices on the radio, improvement of situational awareness, and encourage community partnerships.

Sales efforts are cognizant of this necessity and will accomplish the cooperative environment with demonstrations and informational meetings between the parties. The SchoolSAFE solution is flexible, radios can be provided for complex or simple radio systems.

The solution will be provided observant of FCC rules and regulations, with either programming or equipment to satisfy licensing demands.

Customer Use Case:

“Radio interoperability is utilized and practiced with exercises all the time, working on unified commands with all the community partners standing next to each other during an exercise at the school and utilizing the SchoolSAFE program. This collaborative approach drastically improves the response.”

Remote Activation

SchoolSAFE Communications with remote activation software and firmware gives SchoolSAFE an IP address and a presence inside school and PSAP data networks. With this powerful, yet simple activation and de-activation tool, the audio communications is instantly available for rapid response, or for other applications such as audio recording or situation play back. This takes the burden off the school and PSAP staff so they can focus on the incident.
Activation can also occur via the radio, if needed, utilizing RF telemetry to bypass the network system.

Enhanced Notification

SchoolSAFE Communications with Enhanced Notification Software works in conjunction with Remote Activation to inform authorized users that a SchoolSAFE event is in progress. Enhanced notification provides awareness to those who need it so the utmost command and control over schools and first responder resources can be attained and situations can be handled most effectively.

Upgrade and Expansion Capabilities

Expansion modules can be easily added in the future. As radio systems change, the SchoolSAFE product can be easily modified to accommodate those changes. Dependent upon what changes, one or two radios can be replaced or reprogrammed. A second channel maybe added for daily use by school security and administrative personnel.
